Why I Love This Business!
I love what I do! I get jazzed helping my clients achieve their dreams and desires! I practice the art of leadership and I teach it! I help people have exciting meetings – for the first time in their lives! If they want engaged employees, check! What a clear plan? Check! Want to better understand the people around you? Check! Co-creation is the name of the game!
How do I do this? Here’s a case in point: my client was a former student (I teach Master’s students at the university level) and the CEO of a small construction company started by her husband. Things were rough and work was slow. She was a smart cookie and she was concerned that her people were worried about the lack of work and were starting to become disengaged. So what did she do? She wanted to create a five-year strategic plan. She’s one smart and very wise person!
She agreed to a two-day event (I couldn’t get her to agree to three) and we took several months to invite the right people. To invent the future you have to see the trends and you have to know where you are at the moment so we invited a whole passel of experts, vendors, clients and employees. She had about 60 people attend.
This was a huge risk for her! Her clients were going to hear about what she wanted for her company, as would her vendors, not to mention her employees. It was very scary. Did I mention she was wise? She was also courageous! People came not knowing what to expect and doing her a favor as they expected to be bored.
We spent the first day hearing about trends, hearing about the current sate of construction and listening to each other share their dreams for the future. The second day we planned. So many folks had only planned to be there for a day and a half (she had been scared to invite them for the whole two days) and boy did they express regret as they left. It had been fun AND informative and they wanted to stay!
So - what happened? She redesigned her company to take advantage of the new trend in sustainability (she hadn't believed it would be important to her) AND several of the companies in the room, hers included, decided to start another company to address the unethical practices that stem from low bidding. Who knew? One of the things I LOVE about my job is that the unexpected so often out shines what any of us could have imagined, you just have to build the space for it to show up!
